Southwestern Style Afghans – Navajo Blankets

Each week I receive requests for more ideas for Southwestern Style Afghans or Navajo Blanket patterns. I’ve searched a few of my favorite free crochet pattern sources online to find a collection of patterns for this theme. I hope you find a Southwestern Style Crochet Blanket Pattern you like in this collection.

Most of these designs are free crochet patterns but some premium patterns are also available. If the pattern is available for sale it will indicate (for sale) beside the title and I have listed them at the very end of the post.

The finished blanket measures approximately 45 inches X 60 inches in size. This pattern was originally published in  Afghans and Matching Pillows | Book No. 505 | Coats & Clark’s O.N.T.

The Pine Tree Afghan Pattern was originally published 1966 in Volume No. 45, Your Favorite Afghans to Knit and Crochet, by the Bernhard Ullmann Company. this pattern is available for free from Free Vintage Crochet. The finished afghan measures approximately 50 inches X 72 inches in size and was crocheted in 5 colors of Worsted Weight Yarn [4] with a 3.75 mm (F) crochet hook and afghan crochet hook (9-inches long).

The Indian Navajo Blanket pattern was originally published in A Manual of Worsted Work For Those Who Knit and Crochet –  Lion Brand Yarn (c. 1912). You can access the pattern for free online from Archive.org. The pattern is on page 113 and if you want the full eBook you can download the PDF for free here.

The Pinal Afghan Pattern is available for free from Purple Kitty Yarns. The pattern was originally published in Afghan and Fashion Collection, Columbia Minerva Book 776. For this project you will need Aran Weight Yarn [4] and size 6 mm (J) or 6.5 mm (K) crochet hook.

The Indian Stripe Afghan Pattern was first available in Beautiful, Beautiful Afghans, Book No. 82 from the American Thread Company. The pattern is now available from Free Vintage Crochet.

A Touch of the South West is an easy to crochet afghan made up of single crochet stitches (sc) worked in one direction only. The project is available from Wendy Harbaugh of Sunshine’s Creations and is crocheted with Medium Weight Yarn [4]  and a 4 mm (G) hook.

The Southwestern Stripes Afghan was designed by Lion Brand Yarn. This project was crocheted with Lion Brand Jiffy Yarn, a Bulky Weight Yarn [5], in 3 colors and a 6.5 mm (K) crochet hook. The finished afghan measures 43 inches X 56 inches.

Navajo Indian Blanket

The Navajo Indian Blanket pattern was designed by Yvonne R. This pattern was crocheted with Medium Weight Yarn [4] in 4 colors and a 4 mm (G) crochet hook. The finished blanket measures 60 inches X 40 inches in size. You can see an image of it here: Retro Remake Get the pattern here.

In the Round Square Navajo Blanket

In the Round Square Navajo Blanket is available from Mama’s Stitchery Projects. The blanket was crocheted with Medium Weight Yarn [4] and a 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook and measures approximately 30 inches square when complete. Get the pattern here.

The Southwest Graph Afghan is a free pattern from Lori Bennet Kramer at Gigi Crochets. The project was crocheted with Super Bulky Weight Yarn in 3 colors, and an 11.5 mm (P) crochet hook. No Longer FREE Navajo Blanket Patterns

The following patterns were available from freepatterns.com, a site run by Annie’s Craft Store. The site has been closed and the patterns are no longer available for free.

You may still be able to find these patterns in vintage copies of the magazines that they were originally published in on sites like eBay, Etsy or Amazon.

It is now called the Graphic Afghans: Sierra Sunrise Crochet Pattern.
